Alben carries grounds maintenance, fencing, drainage, landscaping and more in South Ribble Borough Council’s open spaces.

Alben Landscapes has been working for South Ribble Borough Council for around seven years. The Council works with Alben to keep its parks and public spaces accessible and growing healthily throughout the seasons.

Nathan McCracken, Civil Engineering Officer for South Ribble Borough Council appreciates the experience and professionalism that the Alben team bring to their work:

“Alben started working for the Council after winning a competitive tender around seven years ago.

Their maintenance and landscaping operatives are very capable and experienced, and the office staff are equally professional and really easy to deal with.

Communication is clear and transparent, so everyone’s on the same page when it comes to scheduling and expectations.

As a local company, they are able to react promptly if we need an urgent response. All our sites are within a public setting, so site security is paramount and – on at least one occasion – Alben has been able to swiftly come and resolve the issue when a section of the perimeter fencing had been breached.

They bring a varied range of skills to the table including general grounds maintenance, footpath improvements, hard landscaping, tree and vegetation works, drainage, and fencing.

As a local authority with lots of public open spaces to maintain, it’s not unusual for Alben to be on two or three of our sites at any given time.”

Alben’s Managing Director, Ben Ashworth, said:

“We work with South Ribble Borough Council on an ad hoc basis, supporting the Council’s own teams. It’s a great organisation to work for, with friendly staff and clear expectations.

We often tender for larger projects that can’t be undertaken by council employees due to the need for our specialist equipment and such. Each year, for example, we’ll use a flail tractor to remove wildflower meadows at the end of the season so they can grow back healthily again the year after.

The waste from this is collected and processed by our ‘bio-chomper’ to create sustainable peat-free compost that can be utilised on other projects throughout the year.

We also manage woodland pathways and carry out improvements in places such as the historic and much-visited Worden Park, as well as memorial improvements too.

It’s a pleasure to work in the beautiful open areas that South Ribble Borough Council is responsible for, and we’re happy to do our part in keeping these treasured spaces safe, healthy and beautiful.”
